Clitoria macrophylla seeds grow into a scrambling perennial or subshrub native to the wet tropical biome from Assam (India) east through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Described by Wall. ex Benth. (Nathaniel Wallich collected it; George Bentham formally described it). The epithet macrophylla means 'large-leaved' (from Greek makros = large + phyllon = leaf), reflecting the notably large leaflets that distinguish this species from the more commonly grown C. ternatea. Known in Thailand as Non-tai-yak, An-chan-pa and Ueang-chan-pa; root uséd in Thai traditional medicine for skin conditions and as an insecticide in horticulture and animal husbandry. Large pale blue-purple flowers. Family Fabaceae.

Full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soils; warm wet tropical conditions. Scrambling perennial subshrub. Suitable for tropical and warm-subtropical gardens.

Clitoria macrophylla — the large-leaved butterfly pea — is a Southeast Asian native valued in traditional Thai medicine for its root, distributed across the wet tropical forests from the Assam hills of India through the whole of Indochina, where it grows as a scrambling subshrub distinguished from its better-known relatives by its noticeably larger leaves and paler flowers.
