Troll dolls originally known as DamTrolls, were created by Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam in 1959. They became a global toy phenomenum in the 1960s and regained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s when many manufacturers started producing different lines of them.
Russ Berrie and Company produced many variations of these dolls, including seasonal and character-themed ones like this "Christmas Grandma" which was first sold in 1990. Another prominent manufacturer at the time, Ace Novelty, created the "Treasure Troll" line which featured colorful hair with matching gems in their bellies.
