Sassuma Arnaa, Mother of the Ocean.
The polar explorer Knud Rasmussen (1879-1933) collected during his artic expedition’s many legends and myths from Greenland. The most famous is The Mother of the Ocean.
She was one of the most important spirit among the Inuit’s. She become sad and sorry over the behavior of the Inuit’s, their lake of respect for the nature and their culture. Therefor she collected all their catching, fish, whales, terrestrial animal and birds I her big hair.
Soon the Inuit’s did not have anything to catch, so they were starving. Then they decided to send an Angakok (necromancer) to the Mother on the bottom of the Ocean. After a long and difficult journey he arrived to the house for the mother. He found a very great women with a very great and dirty hair. After some time he got permission to clean the hair and all the catching could go.
The Mother of the Ocean became very happy and send the Angakok back with the message to the Inuit's, that they had to shove more respect for the nature.
