1989 Land Rover 110 – Cummins 6BT Conversion

This is not a standard Land Rover, over the course of a comprehensive conversion completed in 2018, it has been rebuilt around one of the most respected diesel engines ever fitted to a 4×4.

Every major modification has been chosen for long-term durability and real-world capability — from the galvanised chassis underneath to the custom transfer box gearing that makes it an effortless motorway cruiser.

BASE VEHICLE
1989 Land Rover 110

ENGINE
Cummins 6BT — 5.9 litre inline-six turbo diesel originally fitted to a Daf 45 lorry

FUEL ECONOMY
~30 mpg

GEARBOX
Original 5 speed box fitted to the 6bt

TRANSFER BOX
Ashcroft Transmissions — 0.9 ratio final drive

70 mph at ~1,800 rpm

ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN

The Ashcroft-built transfer box features their 0.9 ratio final drive gear — the result is a genuinely relaxed motorway vehicle. 70 mph arrives at just 1,800 rpm, dramatically reducing engine wear, fuel consumption, and noise on long journeys.

A modified fuel pump governor spring has also been fitted, allowing the engine to rev more freely beyond the standard cut-off and making full use of the 6BT’s power band.

CHASSIS & STRUCTURE
Chassis: Marsland galvanised — corrosion-proof for life, painted with Buzzweld CIO
Clutch: Air-assisted — light pedal effort
RX8 front seats, the drivers one being electrically operated
Range Rover classic rear seats
Led headlamps completely change night time driving

EQUIPMENT & COMFORT
Diesel night heater — effective cab warmth independent of the engine, ideal for camping or early morning starts in winter
Air-assisted clutch — makes the heavy-duty drivetrain entirely manageable in town and off-road
Two complete sets of wheels and tyres included: all-terrain and mud-terrain — genuine year-round versatility without the cost of buying a second set.

Optimill removable steering wheel with locking boss provides extra security.

This is an honest, capable, and extensively modified Land Rover. The Cummins 6BT is one of the most bulletproof diesel engines in existence; combined with the Marsland galvanised chassis, the Ashcroft transfer box, and the thoughtful supporting modifications, this represents a significant investment of time and money done properly. Viewing is welcomed and encouraged — it will tell you everything you need to know.

This Land Rover was built by myself when I was running a workshop, it was built with the intention of never selling it. I haven't driven it on the road for a year now as my work has changed, so rather than have it sitting in the corner of the yard gathering dust I would rather it get used by a new owner and I can put the money to the next chapter in my life.
