Amorphophallus titanum seeds grow into the titan arum or corpse flower — the plant with the world's largest unbranched inflorescence, native to the wet tropical biome of western Sumatra, Indonesia. Discovered by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari (1843–1920) in the Sumatran rainforest in 1878 — he was so astonished by what he found that he sent a description to Kew before he even had a name for it. The spadix reaches 1.5–3+ m in height, surrounded by the deeply pleated, dark crimson-purple spathe. The inflorescence generates intense heat (thermogenesis) and produces an overwhelming stench — a combination of rotting flesh, decomposing fish and dung — to attract its natural pollinators (carrion beetles and flesh flies) from kilometres away. Flowers only once every several years from a corm that can weigh over 70 kg. Each flowering event at a botanical garden draws thousands of visitors. Family Araceae.
Partial shade; rich, extremely fertile, moist soils; warm tropical conditions (minimum 15°C). A long-term commitment requiring large space and patience; corms may take 7–10 years to flower.
Amorphophallus titanum — the titan arum — is one of the most spectacular plants on earth: the holder of the world record for the largest unbranched inflorescence, an unmistakable Sumatran rainforest giant whose rare and overwhelming flowering events draw thousands of spectators to botanical gardens worldwide whenever it deigns to bloom.
