Title: The Disputation, 1972, By Levy or Ben Levi,332 pages. The Disputation (whose author "prefers to remain anonymous") is a polemic addressed to those who fight the evangelization of Jews to Christianity.
The framework of the book is a simple one. In the middle Ages, Jews were forced to debate the merits of their faith vs. Christianity. However, the Jews were NOT allowed to say anything that could be construed as "insulting" to "the true faith". Saying anything "insulting" was grounds for imprisonment (or worse). As a result, these "debates" were pretty much one-sided and restrictive as to what Jews can say in their defense of Judaism.
However, there WAS an exception. The Spanish King James 1st of Aragon summoned the Jewish Sage Nachmanides to a debate and promised that Nachmanides could state all that he wished without fear. Nachmanides actually recorded the "dispute" and we have his transcript. Interestingly enough, while the debate was supposed to be "2-sided" (i.e., the Christian could challenge the Jew and then the Jew could challenge the Christian), the debate never got to the point where Nachmanides was able to challenge his Christian counterpart. Instead, the King ended the debate early -- declaring that he had never heard someone defend an incorrect position as well as Nachmanides did. He subsequently gave Nachmanides a large amount of money (the transaction is -- I believe -- recorded). However, the Christian Priests at the time complained to the Pope that Nachmanides had "slandered" their "Holy faith". As a result, Nachmanides was expelled from Spain and -- as a very old man -- emigrated to the land of Israel where he passed away.
This book allows Nachmanides to question the Christian faith. This is done by FIRST developing an entire philosophical framework and then taking the Christian Bible and showing instances of errors, matters of illogic, contradictions etc.
This is CLEARLY a polemic work. I would not suggest that anyone comfortable with their Christian faith read it. However, this book provides an outstanding framework for understanding WHY the Jew has rejected Christianity. It will also be very thought provoking for those Christians who wish to examine their faith critically, as well as for Jews who have toyed around with changing their Religion..
Anyone who wants to know WHY the Jew has ALWAYS rejected Christianity (to the extent that now evangelizing is aimed at those Jews IGNORANT of their heritage) will find this book of great interest and value.
Also, as lately the Shroud of Turin has been in the news and is being touted as a true relic. The author in this book devotes an entire chapter on the subject and DETAILS why the shroud is a forgery and a fake and CANNOT be the real thing. This chapter is VERY relevant to today's recent "discoveries" and points out the "elephant in the room" that nobody seems to see or care about...especially Christians.
