How to determine if a CV Axle is damaged?

If you suspect a problem with your vehicle's CV Axle, you can use the following simple diagnostic methods:

    (1) Visual Inspection

Carefully inspect the CV Axle's dust boot. If the boot is torn and grease is leaking, the CV Axle is likely faulty and needs to be replaced.

    (2) Test Drive Inspection

To inspect the outer CV Axle: Put the vehicle in reverse gear, turn the steering wheel to the left and right, then reverse and drive in a circle. If you hear a noticeable clicking or snapping sound, the outer CV joint is likely severely worn.

To inspect the inner CV Axle: Drive the vehicle in reverse gear while accelerating and decelerating. If you hear a noticeable clicking sound, the inner CV Axle is likely worn.

If your vehicle's CV Axle needs replacing, you can try replacing it yourself. The steps are as follows:

    (1) Removing the Vehicle's Axle Nut

    • First, remove the vehicle's hubcap to expose the axle nut.
    • Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut. This secures the axle nut and allows further removal.
    • Use appropriate tools to remove the axle nut.

    (2) Removing the Wheel and Brake Assembly

    • Use a jack to lift the side of the vehicle where the CV Axle needs to be replaced to ensure stability.
    • Place a jack stand under the vehicle to provide more stable support and ensure safe operation.
    • Remove the wheel on the lifted side.
    • Remove the brake caliper. The brake caliper is connected to the brake disc, so you need to loosen the relevant fixings first.
    • Remove the bolts connecting the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle to separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
    • Remove the bolts connecting the wheel hub to the shock absorber tower.

    (3) Removing and Replacing the CV Axle

    • Use a tool to pry the CV Axle away from the associated components.
    • Install the new CV Axle into the transmission case, ensuring it is seated properly and securely connected.
    • Re-thread the CV Axle through the wheel hub assembly, also ensuring it is properly seated.
    • Reinstall the previously removed assemblies in the reverse order of disassembly, ensuring each component is securely installed.
    • Reinstall the wheel on the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts.
    • Finally, tighten the axle nut to complete the CV Axle replacement.
