I bought this BMW around 4 years ago as a little project after Covid as a non runner suspecting that the engine had cam chain/timing issues. I removed the cylinder head to check the valves and found the usual BMW chain guide wear problems so ended up dropping the sump and pulling out the pistons to see what was needed to be replaced. The sump was cleaned out properly and I replaced the big end bearings with a set off King racing shells and the crank was absolutely perfect, as you can see in the photos. The pistons were stripped and ultrasonically cleaned and measured and well within specs so they went back in as is.
The head was stripped ,cleaned and treated to a light flow/valve job with 0.8mm removed from the face to raise compression to 11.2 to 1 and the combustion chambers polished, all assembled with the latest genuine BMW cam chain tensioner to ensure future reliability. I replaced spark plugs all filters and a set of coils as a matter of course. I've since done around 15000 miles in it and it runs really well for a 2.0L and I've never had to put any oil it. The oil was changed 2 months ago at 121000 miles so not due for a while.
I've replaced loads of other bits over the years like Brembo discs and pads fresh brake fluid, rear caliper, new Bilstein rear shocks with top mounts, new wipers etc. She failed the last MOT only because of the handbrake needing adjustment but there was not even an advisory reported.
I got a bit carried away a couple of years ago and splashed out on a full respray due to some laquer peel in areas and fitted a hard top last year which I think really suits the car nicely
It is very well spec'd with electric seats power folding electric heated mirrors, cruise control, A/C that's ice cold and an Android head unit that allows you to use all the apps when connected to your phone and has a reversing camera also as well as the usual navigation apps like Waze, Google etc.
There are not many bad points to report if I'm honest, there is a tiny dent in the bonnet from the inside which was my fault, the bonnet closed on my brake bleed bottle in high wind. the drivers seat lower electric controls are reversed due to the controller being a passenger side one but it works perfectly otherwise. The ride is quite firm due to lowering springs which were on it when I bought it but it does handle incredibly well. The mileage will go up slightly as I use it on the weekends.
Due to low emissions (190G/m I think) it avoids the upcoming tax theft by the government and stays in the lower bracket.
I think I have covered everything but if you have any questions or want more photos please feel free to ask but keep in mind this is a 20 year old car.
