Zeiss Universal Stage

Zeiss Universal Rotating Stage

SN. 23010 (Manufactured in the 1970s)

This is a rotating stage for transmitted polarized light samples from Carl Zeiss.

It rotates on four axes (and on five axes when combined with the microscope's rotating stage).

A universal stage is used to analyze the crystal axis (the structure of a crystal with an optical axis). It rotates the crystal so that the plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the microscope, the N&S directions of the eyepiece crosshairs, and the plane of symmetry of the crystal's refractive index coincide with each other.

Nowadays, with advancements in X-ray analysis techniques for measuring curved shapes, universal stages are rarely used anymore.

Minerals and rocks are attached to a glass slide, polished thinly (thinned) until light can pass through, and then mounted in a cover slip to create a polished specimen. The polished specimen is then sandwiched between a hemispherical lens on the top (upper segment) and a hemispherical lens on the bottom (lower segment) and examined under a transmission polarizing microscope.

All the lenses on the Universal Stage are clear, and the rotating parts work without any problems.

The original packaging is meticulously designed down to the smallest parts, and the wooden case is also in excellent condition.

The universal stage is used by attaching it to the rotating sample stage of a transmission polarizing microscope. (See the yellow arrow and the third image.)

The empty slot in the upper corner of the case is a spare slot for housing the condenser (polarizer) of a polarizing microscope. (See image 4)

The spacing between the two fixing screws used to attach the universal stage to the circular sample stage is 90 mm.

Upper and lower segments nD 1.554 and nD 1.648

Objective lenses: 2.5x, 6.3x, 10x, 20x

(See the green and red arrows, image 11)
