Forty-eight artists and designers were chosen from over 500 entries by two separate juries (Fine Arts and Applied Arts), each receiving a page of biographical listing, artist's statement, exhibitions, awards, and a plate of one selected work. Project Director Daniel Rosenfeld; edited by Judith A. Singsen. Dedicated "In Memoriam Joseph Noboru Goto 1916-1994," the Japanese-American abstract-expressionist welded-steel sculptor who died in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on January 18, 1994, weeks before the exhibition opened; his work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the RISD Museum. Notable artists featured include the cast-glass sculptor Daniel Clayman (collections: Corning Museum of Glass, Smithsonian Renwick Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Cleveland Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Arts and Design); the studio furniture maker John Dunnigan (Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston; longtime RISD Furniture Design faculty); Timothy S. Philbrick (1952-2022), studio furniture maker in the Newport Goddard-Townsend tradition; the contemporary jeweler Donald Friedlich (Victoria and Albert Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, MFA Boston, Cooper Hewitt, LACMA); and the sculptor and public artist Janet Zweig (Walker Art Center collection; Rome Prize 1992; NEA Sculpture Fellowship 1994; now senior critic at RISD). The jury for the Division of Fine Arts included Richard Armstrong, then Curator of Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum and later Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2008-2022), together with the gallerist Paula Cooper and Katy Kline of the MIT List Visual Arts Center.
