Kongtrul Jigme Namgyel (also known as Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, the Tibetan Buddhist lama recognized by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and the 16th Karmapa as an emanation of the 19th-century master Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye) was born in Himachal Pradesh in 1964, moved to the United States in 1989, and founded Mangala Shri Bhuti in Colorado, where he also served five years as a professor of Buddhist philosophy at Naropa University. He began painting in the mid-1990s under the guidance of the French abstract expressionist Yahne Le Toumelin, with Kandinsky and Picasso cited as early influences. The catalog opens with a biographical note and a photograph of the artist at work, followed by his statement describing the paintings as an offering to classical music (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart) and to the natural flow of creativity that arises without self-consciousness in meditation. Large color plates of works including Heaven and Earth (48 x 60 in.), 108 Dragons (48 x 60 in.), Yoni (54 x 54 in.), Flamenco (40 x 40 in.), Bliss (60 x 48 in.), Bach (40 x 40 in.), Veils (48 x 36 in.) with detail, and Brahma (40 x 30 in.) with detail.
