This series was inspired by two movies—“Legally Blonde I” and “The Devil Wears Prada I.” From “Legally Blonde” the inspiration was Buster, the spoiled pooch of Elle Woods, and from “The Devil Wears Prada,” the inspiration was the scene when Andrea goes to Nigel for help and the first item he pulls off a rack for her to wear is a poncho because he didn’t have anything in a size 6.

Ah, the poncho…Is it a shawl, is it a tablecloth, is it a blanket…the poncho originated with indigenous peoples in the South American Andes mountains (modern-day Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador) over 2,000 to 2,500 years ago. They are generally hand-woven from alpaca or llama wool to provide warmth and protection from the elements. When other cultures recognized the garment’s practicality, it spread throughout the Americas and, over time, became especially linked to Mexican culture.

So, each of these poncho-wearing dolls has a pampered Chihuahua, which is actually a chihuahua duck (something I can’t explain) complete with a collar that matches the doll’s purse, a chain leash than can be unclipped, a wicker basket “bed” with a pillow that matches the doll’s poncho, a bone and a ball. The basket is held on the wrist with a stretchy O-ring.

Peque’s owner is a modern Brooklyn Fashionista wearing a creamy, fringed, two-button poncho over a black and white striped top, paired with black leggings (From Ebay’s “bestdresseddoll”). Her accessories include black  boots, a black faux patent leather purse held on the wrist with a stretchy O-ring, a chihuahua-themed cell phone held on the wrist with a beaded stretch bracelet, a single silver hand earring, and sunglasses. This modern Fashionista doll has a painted on American flag swimsuit, copper eyes, brown hair with highlights, flat feet, and splayed fingers. I am including a photo of the doll in her original packaging, but I don’t have the packaging.
