Condition: Dead / Non-functional – Selling strictly for parts or repair only. Does not power on reliably, no charging, all ports dead.
Exact symptoms (started ~2 weeks before it fully died):
• All USB-C / Thunderbolt ports stopped working simultaneously
• No charging detected (neither USB-C nor MagSafe)
• Multiple hard shutdowns / stalls in a single day
• Boot faults logged: ResetCounter: Boot faults = dbg_rst, reset_in2 (external hardware reset signal being asserted)
• System would overheat due to lost fan/PMU control
• Battery now completely drained and machine is fully dead
Apple Store diagnosis (taken in person):
They identified a small pimple/swelling on the battery and quoted $1300 AUD for a full logic board + top case replacement. No AppleCare.
My independent analysis (based on IORegistry logs):
This matches the classic failure of the I/O board (small USB-C daughterboard that handles all ports, power delivery, and charging negotiation). It is separate from the main logic board and much cheaper to replace (~$50–100 part + labour at independent shops). The battery swelling is common on these models around 500+ cycles and may have contributed by pressing on components. The reset_in2 signal explains the repeated forced reboots and power management issues.
Why it’s dead now:
The I/O board fault progressed rapidly → lost all charging paths → battery ran to zero. No response to power button or charger.
Known good / salvageable parts (to the best of my knowledge):
• Screen / display assembly working (does have dust)
• Keyboard and trackpad
• Speakers, fans, hinges, chassis (chassis has wear as seen in photos)
• Battery has pimple
Specs:
• Model year: 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16”

• Colour: Silver
Important notes for buyers:
• Sold AS-IS, for parts or advanced repair only. No returns or refunds.
• Battery is swollen – this is a safety hazard. Proper disposal or replacement required.
• No charger, no original box included.
• I can provide the original Apple diagnostic report and IORegistry logs upon request (via message before purchase).
• Great candidate for I/O board swap (user-replaceable per iFixit) or component-level logic board repair at specialist shops. Many similar units have been revived cheaply this way.
Selling because: Machine is beyond my ability to repair economically, and I need the space/parts value.
Serious buyers only – please ask any questions before bidding. I’m happy to share more details or photos of the internals if requested.
