The Portuguese emerged as an independent kingdom in the 12th Century, and immediately begin to expand their realm.  Led by the famous Henry the Navigator (1394-1460), the Portuguese set sail across the Oceans, establishing themselves in both the Far East and South America.  By 1494 the Portuguese had conquered nearly 1/2 of the Transoceanic world, however, they did not have enough of a population to fully colonize all of this new world, leaving many areas vulnerable to the aggressive Spanish, French and Dutch explorers.  None the less, they were a maritime force to be reckoned with and the Portuguese legacy lives on as demonstrated by the former Portuguese possessions of Macau off Main Land China, Goa in southern India, and, of course, Brazil which even retains the Portuguese language.

On the obverse (front) of Portuguese coins you will find the date and a Jerusalem cross with the motto In Hoc Signo Vinces which translates to "In this sign (the cross) we will be victorious". On the reverse is the Kings name in Latin within a wreath surmounted by a crown.  These beautiful 22k gold relics will remain a piece of our heritage to live on forever.
