VDG Militaria - Preserving History

Product Description

Below is the detailed description of the product:

This is an original Spanish-American War era US Army crossed rifles insignia with regimental number “264” affixed above, designating the 264th Infantry Regiment. The crossed Springfield rifle design was adopted in 1875 as the branch insignia for the Infantry and was worn on caps, collars, and uniform lapels. Regimental numbers were commonly attached above the rifles to identify the soldier’s parent regiment.

While numbered regiments such as the 264th were frequently short-lived National Guard or volunteer organizations, they played a vital role in the rapid mobilization for the Spanish-American War (1898) and subsequent Philippine-American War. Volunteer infantry regiments were organized from across the states to bolster the Regular Army for campaigns in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Units like the 264th typically performed garrison duties, trained replacement drafts, and occasionally deployed to protect strategic locations during the occupation period.

This gilt-finished insignia is constructed of stamped brass with a long horizontal pinback, typical of late-19th-century manufacture. A fine representative artifact of the mobilization of America’s citizen-soldiers during the age of overseas expansion and the rise of the United States as a global power at the turn of the 20th century.
