Description
"Ties" was the award-winning company magazine of the former Southern Railway System. The first issue appeared in March 1947, and the last issue was published in March 1982, at which time Southern merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway and "Ties" was discontinued. The magazine was published monthly through 1968; it was issued every two months from 1968 through the last edition. It was considered to be among the finest of the railroad company magazines. All issues contain feature stories about railroad operations, company news, and many photographs; the later issues were printed in color, some with 2-page centerfold color photos.
You are bidding on an issue of "Ties" from July/August 1971. The cover shows movie actor Jimmy Stewart, on-site in Atlanta for the filming of the movie "Fool's Paradise"; the steam locomotive used in the movie was Southern's # 722. Features in the magazine include an illustrated story about the movie; the shipment of radishes using refrigerated trailers; an outline of the ASTRO program (America's Sound Transportation Review Organization) which was being promoted by the nation's railroads; a profile on Frank Clodfelter, a locomotive engineer from Asheville (NC) who was a photographer; Southern's "Fast Freight Game" designed for customers; a report on the company's 1970 performance; and a promotion for the United Givers Fund and Community Chest campaigns. An historical album section includes photos of an Interstate Railroad steam engine (dated 1920), the flooding of the Asheville (NC) depot by the French Broad River (1916), and an Alabama Great Southern steam engine in Erlanger (KY) about 1915. This issue contains over 3 dozen photos.
This issue measures appx 11 x 8 1/2 inches and contains 30 pages. It is in excellent condition. Other sellers offer used and worn issues at similar prices, but this copy has never been in circulation. The magazine has no rips, tears, writing, markings or mailing labels, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.
A nice addition for any railroad collector, especially fans of Southern. See my other listings of "Ties" now on auction.
