A spectacular and historically rich stock certificate from the Lone Star Field Trial Club of Texas, Certificate No. 57, issued to C.W. Ogden for one share at $10. The visual centerpiece is a photographic vignette of Woolton’s Lass, Winner of the 1908 Championship, owned by G.A.C. Halff — a name that places this document squarely in the upper echelon of Texas history.

G.A.C. Halff was the son of Solomon Halff, co-founder of the Alamo National Bank and one of San Antonio’s most prominent merchant dynasties. G.A.C. himself went on to organize one of the first automobile dealerships in Texas, found the first wholesale auto supply outlet in the state in 1911, and in 1922 founded radio station WOAI San Antonio — one of the first broadcasting stations in the United States. His ownership of the 1908 field trial champion Woolton’s Lass, immortalized in this certificate’s central vignette, reflects the sporting and social prominence of the Halff family in early Texas.

The reverse is equally remarkable, featuring engraved portrait photographs of Col. Wm. E. Hughes of Denver, Colorado — described as “a former Texan, an early pioneer of Texas field trials” — and Maj. A.J. Ross of Dallas, Texas, identified as “one of the early pioneers of field trials in Texas. Now deceased.” These biographical vignettes make this far more than a typical stock certificate — it is a documented artifact of early Texas sporting culture.

The obverse design is stunning: a bold eagle at top center, rich golden guilloche background, Gothic lettering, and the photo of Woolton’s Lass all combined in a single-page document unlike any standard securities certificate.
