Model A1708, EMC 3164. 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5-7360U (7th gen Kaby Lake). 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 (soldered). 128 GB Apple proprietary PCIe NVMe SSD (FAULTY — see below).
Colour: Silver / Space Grey

Fault
Machine powers on — chime, backlight and keyboard illumination all confirmed (see photo). Will NOT boot to macOS; displays [folder with question mark / prohibitory symbol — describe exactly]. Cannot access macOS Recovery (Cmd+R) or Internet Recovery (Cmd+Opt+R). SMC reset and NVRAM reset attempted with no change. Most likely cause: failed internal SSD module or logic-board SSD controller. Fault has NOT been professionally diagnosed — buyer accepts all risk.

Why this is a good repair project
The A1708 (Function Keys, non-Touch Bar) has a REMOVABLE proprietary SSD — unlike the Touch Bar A1706 which is soldered. Replacement Apple SSD modules and Sintech/NFHK N-1708A adapters (for standard M.2 2242 NVMe) are readily available — if the logic board is healthy this is a straightforward fix.

Security / data / account status
This model pre-dates the T2 security chip, so Activation Lock / Find My Mac do not apply — no iCloud lock possible. No EFI firmware password has ever been set. I am the original owner; the machine has been removed from my Apple ID (appleid.apple.com → Devices). Because the SSD will not boot it cannot be wiped through macOS, but Apple’s hardware encryption on A1708 SSDs makes stored data effectively unrecoverable.

Cosmetic condition
All keys present. Screen glass undamaged. Hinges firm.
