Lionhearts is a parallel biography of Richard I of England and Saladin, the two dominant military leaders of the Third Crusade. Author and military historian Geoffrey Regan traces the early lives and rise to power of each figure in alternating chapters, situating their stories within the broader geopolitical context of twelfth-century Europe and the Middle East. Richard navigated the turbulent Plantagenet court of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine before launching his crusade in 1191; Saladin spent decades uniting the fragmented Islamic forces of Egypt and Syria before confronting the Christian presence in the Holy Land. The book culminates in their indirect confrontation during the siege of Acre and the broader campaign for Jerusalem. Despite their historical intertwining, the two men never met. Regan examines their shared qualities — courage, nobility, and leadership — while documenting a conflict that resolved in stalemate. Includes bibliographical references and index.
