Heddons Dowagiac Early Bamboo Bait Casting Rod + Small Reel
This early Heddon bait casting rod is stamped “HEDDONS DOWAGIAC .1.08.” on the reel seat. The closely spaced red and black wrappings from handle to tip suggest this is actually very early, and makes me wonder if the last 2 digits “08” signify the production date of 1908? The varnish has darkened with age making it difficult to show the windings/wraps. The windings are generally all good with the exception of the line guide on the tip section, which is still fully intact but missing a part of the winding. The two line guides and tip have agate liners. The ferrules join with moderate resistance and hold tight. The reel is secured by a sliding collar that secures with a short twist in the direction depicted by the arrow (see pics). The cork handle is dark with age but has no pitting or pieces missing. The nickel-plated butt cap is firmly attached. The rod measures 58” long assembled. The reel is stamped “80” on the foot and cranks smoothly. The sliding pool tensioner and click knobs work. No stampings are evident on the faceplate. Rod will be shipped within a 2” black plastic pvc waste pipe for protection (end caps will be taped to the tube for easy removal). Reel will be shipped separately as it does not fit in the pvc waste pipe. The shipping cost includes the cost of the pvc pipe, end caps, and insurance.
