Up for sale is a beautiful piece of early American craftsmanship. This unmarked marking gauge is a quintessential example of a 19th-century "user-made" or early small-shop tool.

Historical Details: Based on the hand-cut nature of the wooden threads and the style of the scribe pin, this piece likely dates from the late 1800s to the turn of the century. It features an all-wood construction with a deep, naturally developed shop patina.

Mechanical Condition: The wooden thumbscrew turns freely and the beam slides through the block. I have not used this tool for a project, as I am a vintage curator and not a woodworker, but the mechanical parts are completely intact and mobile.

Aesthetic Condition: This tool has "soul." It shows honest wear, minor nicks, and the smooth darkening of the wood that only comes from decades of use. It is perfect for an industrial display or a dedicated antique tool collection.
