Fitment Notes

  • This is a DampTronic shock designed exclusively for BMW M3/M4 vehicles equipped with the factory EDC (Electronic Damping Control) system — it is NOT compatible with M3/M4 models without EDC
  • Rear position only — Right (Passenger) side; the matching Left (Driver) side is Bilstein part number 26-245591
  • Sold individually — order both 26-246970 (right) and 26-245591 (left) for a complete rear axle upgrade
  • Chassis codes: F80 (M3 Sedan), F82 (M4 Coupe), F83 (M4 Convertible)
  • Must be used with factory OE coil springs — not intended for use with lowering springs; Bilstein recommends the B8 Performance Plus or B16 DampTronic coilover kit for lowered applications
  • Fully plug-and-play with factory EDC electronics — retains all OEM suspension modes, drive modes, and in-cabin damper controls with no reprogramming required
  • RWD only — all F80 M3 and F82/F83 M4 models are rear-wheel drive as standard

Features

  • Bilstein B6 Performance (DampTronic) — a performance-grade monotube upgrade to the factory electronic damper, precision-engineered to interface with BMW's EDC system on the F80/F82/F83 platform
  • Fully compatible with BMW's factory Electronic Damping Control (EDC) system — all factory drive modes, suspension settings (Comfort, Sport, Sport+), and in-cabin controls remain fully operational after installation
  • 46mm monotube design eliminates the cavitation and performance fade characteristic of factory twin-tube dampers under hard driving, delivering consistent, fade-resistant damping at all EDC settings
  • High-pressure monotube gas design prevents oil aeration (foaming) even under sustained track use or aggressive canyon driving — maintaining full damping capability where factory dampers would degrade
  • Vehicle-specific valve settings developed and Nürburgring-tested for the BMW M3/M4 F-series application, delivering improved cornering stability, body control, and driver feedback in all conditions
  • Works seamlessly with factory OE coil springs for a clean, bolt-on upgrade that retains factory ride height
  • Bilstein's patented seamless monotube construction maximizes heat dissipation and extends service life beyond factory twin-tube dampers
  • Independent compression and rebound tuning via Bilstein's digressive piston design provides optimum ride comfort and performance without compromise
  • Finish: Yellow Paint — Bilstein's signature coating providing corrosion resistance and immediate brand recognition
  • Made in Germany to OE-plus quality standards with a limited lifetime warranty

Product Description

The Bilstein 26-246970 B6 Performance (DampTronic) Rear Right Shock Absorber is the passenger-side rear damper upgrade for the 2015–2020 BMW M3 (F80), M4 Coupe (F82), and M4 Convertible (F83) — including Competition, CS, and GTS variants — on vehicles equipped with EDC (Electronic Damping Control). As a DampTronic-designated shock, the 26-246970 is specifically engineered to interface electronically with BMW's factory EDC system, making it fully plug-and-play: all factory suspension modes, drive modes, and in-cabin adjustment controls operate exactly as designed without any reprogramming, recoding, or warning lights. This makes it the ideal upgrade for M3/M4 owners who want genuinely improved damping performance without giving up the sophisticated electronic suspension functionality the car was engineered around.

The factory F80/F82/F83 M3/M4 uses an EDC-controlled twin-tube damper design. While effective in normal use, twin-tube construction is susceptible to cavitation and fade under the repeated hard inputs these cars generate during track days, aggressive road driving, or sustained high-speed use. The Bilstein 26-246970 replaces this with a 46mm monotube design running high-pressure gas — a construction that cannot cavitate and maintains consistent damping force regardless of heat load or use intensity. Bilstein's application-specific valve settings were developed and tested on the Nürburgring for the F-series M3/M4 chassis, delivering sharper body control, better mid-corner stability, and more communicative driver feedback across all EDC settings from Comfort through Sport+.

This shock is intended for use with factory OE coil springs at stock ride height. For owners wishing to lower their M3/M4 while retaining EDC compatibility, the Bilstein B16 DampTronic coilover system (49-246988) is the recommended alternative. This shock is sold as a single right (passenger) side unit — the matching left (driver) side is Bilstein part number 26-245591 and must be purchased separately to complete the rear axle upgrade. All F80 M3 and F82/F83 M4 models are rear-wheel drive only. Bilstein backs the 26-246970 with a limited lifetime warranty.
