These Hand blown Handmade Glass Prosthetic eyeballs are from the era 1880-1939 and were made in Lauscha, Germany by the Ludwig MUELLER-URI family. Glass is possibly cryolite. Lauscha is a small glassmakers town in Germany where most of the early glass eyes were made. Each prosthetic eye is hand blown on a steel tube and worked by hand. Family glass maker secrets were handed down from generation to generation making each eye a true work of art. Every eye is a one of a kind collectors piece. Matching a persons true eye color and vein pattern was a challenge and required much time and effort to make the eye as realistic as possible. An important innovation in glass eyes was started in Lauscha, Germany around 1889, the double -prosthesis, a thicker prostheses which allows compensating the loss of substance in the cavity/eye socket. These eyes are the highest quality and most when worn by a patient are hard to distinguish from the real eye.
