France - Philip IV “the Fair” 1285-1314 Billon Bourgeois Simple Bourges. Genuine
France, Royal. Philip IV “le Bel” (the Fair) 1285–1314. Billon bourgeois simple (1.01 g), PHILIPPVS REX, cross cutting legend below / BVGENSIS in field, NOVVS under lis, Dy.232, C.233, L.237. VF. Ex B.Sparks 17.10.97 Under Philip IV the Paris court tightened fiscal control and refined the coinage system to serve growing administration and trade. Local billon like the bourgeois simple kept daily markets moving in provincial centers. At Bourges the mint proclaimed its identity right on the flan, BVGENSIS, while NOVVS signaled a current standard the public could trust. These pieces changed hands in fairs and toll houses across Berry, small but dependable instruments of royal policy and urban commerce during a formative moment for the French monarchy. VF. Attractive natural gray tone on wholesome billon, central cross and royal legend PHILIPPVS REX clear, peripheral letters largely legible. Reverse well centered, BVGENSIS in the field bold, fleur de lis crisp with NOVVS below. Surfaces stable with light honest circulation, no harsh cleaning, flan sound. This coin is very nice and important because it shows the Bourges mint legends unusually well for the type, it represents the practical backbone of Philip IV’s small change, and it comes with solid literature references and a recorded 1997 provenance that support catalog confidence
