Apollo 13 was NASA's third attempt to land on the moon, but the mission was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module ruptured during flight on April 11, 1970.
"Houston, We've Had A Problem."
The explosion damaged the spacecraft, forcing the crew of astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert to circle the moon and use its gravity to slingshot themselves back to Earth. After six days in space, the crew returned safely, and the mission was considered a "successful failure" due to the experience gained in rescuing them.
