The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is an American four-engine heavy bomber developed for the United States Army Air Corps. The maiden flight was on 28 July 1935. It was introduced into service in April of 1938. The B-17 saw early action in the Pacific War, where it conducted air raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. But it was primarily used by the United States Army Air Force in the daylight bombing of the Allied strategic bombing campaign over Europe during World War Two. There were over 12,700 models manufactured between 1936-1945. There are still a few restored airworthy examples flying at air shows around the world.
The B-17G variant was the final variant. It was heavily used in the Eighth Air Force's bombing campaigns over Europe during World War Two. The B-17G variant added the chin turret to counter frontal attacks. The "G" model had its first flight on 16 August 1943. There were a total of 8,680 models manufactured.
This highly detailed reproduction of the B-17G "Man 'o' War II Horsepower LTD" is a historic aircraft. It retained the name after the original Man 'o War, a B-17F model, was lost in combat. Man 'o War II was assigned to the 613th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group, of the Eighth Air Force. The aircraft served for nine months until a mission on 02 November 1944 to Merseburg, Germany. After the bomb run, it was intercepted and heavily damaged by German fighters. The tail broke away and the aircraft crashed in Gnotsch, Germany. Of the nine crew members, five died and four were captured and became prisoners of war.
