GABRIELLE DESIGNS PADDINGTON BEAR

This original Gabrielle Paddington Bear shows his age with character.  Please note that both the felt hat and red duffle coat have sustained significant moth damage, resulting in several visible holes and thinning of the fabric throughout.  The bear himself remains intact, and the "Please look after this bear" tag, although worn, is still present.  His face and paws are slightly grubby and he does have a small hole in the neck seam under his chin.  Please refer closely to the photos for a detailed view of the textile wear.  His size 5 Dunlop wellington boots are in good condition.  Please contact us for more details if required.

The first plush Paddington was created in 1972 by Shirley Clarkson (mother of broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson). Unable to find a Paddington doll for her children, Jeremy and Joanna, she decided to hand-sew her own. These early prototypes were made on her kitchen table in Doncaster, England.  After Michael Bond, the author of the Paddington books, saw the prototype, he granted Shirley the first-ever license to produce the bears. She named her company Gabrielle Designs (after her husband's middle name).
