For your consideration: this is a gorgeous antique F.H. Ayres chess set in boxwood and ebony dating to the 1880s-1890s.
F.H. Ayres was a British manufacturer in competition with J. Jaques in that era.

The set is in excellent condition. I believe that the boxwood king's cross is a replacement (pictured). One ebony knight has a hairline crack in the base (pictured). Seven of the eight ebony pawns have small cracks in the base. One ebony bishop has a small crack in the base. Difficult to show in pictures, but I have pictured these pieces.

All 32 pieces are weighted. The four knights unscrew as-expected and pictured. Subtle differences in the hand-carved knight heads as-expected and pictured. The king-side knights and rooks are stamped with the expected crown.

Kings are 3.5" in height. The base baize is in good condition. All of the red baize pads match.

The set will come with a modern hardwood storage box that is felt lined (see pictures).

Ships free to the continental USA. All others please request a quote before buying. Each piece will be carefully wrapped
individually for safe transport.

NOTE: THE PIECES ARE DISPLAYED ON A DRUEKE CHESSBOARD THAT IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS SALE.
ONLY THE PIECES AND STORAGE BOX ARE INCLUDED.

I will be listing several antique J. Jaques chess sets in the next few months.
