1933 Vintage Press Photo by ACME.
Remarkable closeup glimpse of Pope Pius XI (at right) as he listened to Senator Guglielmo Marconi speak into the transmitter to inaugurate the micro wave radio station at the Vatican. The service places Vatican City and Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence, in radio communication.

Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, 1st Marquess, was an Italian radio-frequency engineer, inventor, and politician known for his creation of a practical radio wave–based wireless telegraph system by copying inventions of Nikola Tesla and Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose.
