Escobaria roseana acharragma SEEDS - SAMEN | Seltene Kaktussamen

Escobaria roseana is a small, soft-bodied cactus from the limestone mountains of north-eastern Mexico, today placed in the genus Acharagma — the name that appears beside it in seed lists. Under current taxonomy the accepted binomial is Acharagma roseanum (Boed.) E.F.Anderson, with Escobaria roseana, Gymnocactus roseanus, Coryphantha roseana, Neolloydia roseana and Thelocactus roseanus all referring to the same plant. The genus name means "without a groove" and points to the areoles, which lack the groove found in Coryphantha and true Escobaria — the single character that sets this small group apart.

The species is restricted to south-eastern Coahuila and adjacent Nuevo León, where it grows on rocky limestone hills among xerophytic scrub. Plants begin solitary and slowly build into clusters of globular to shortly cylindrical stems, each about 4-6 cm tall and 2-5 cm across, with tubercles set in neat rows. The dense spination is whitish-yellow to golden — 4 to 6 centrals barely distinguishable from the 15 to 30 radials — and in spring cream-yellow to pale pink flowers around 1.5-2 cm wide open at the stem apex, each petal marked with a darker midvein.

Sow in a mineral, sharply drained mix with added limestone grit at about 20-25 °C, keeping seedlings bright and only lightly shaded. Growth is slow and the soft body resents stagnant moisture, so water thoroughly but let the compost dry out completely between soakings, and keep the plants dry and above roughly 5 °C through winter. Wild populations are limited and under collection pressure, which makes nursery-raised seed the sensible way to bring this cactus into a collection.
