From the heart of the

Pennsylvania Dutch farming communities

nestled among the rolling hills of

Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Offered for auction:

A very beautiful, mysterious purple or amethyst slag glass hen on nest.. was she made by Westmoreland? Portieux? LG Wight? Mosser?

In researching this lovely lady, I came upon an article that stated the following about hen on nests in general:

Unmarked Pieces:

Many companies produced unmarked hen on nest dishes. It is common to find both marked and unmarked pieces, as not all glass produced was consistently marked.

Manufacturers had various marks over their history, but their marks were not always placed on every item.

Additionally, sometimes a paper label was used and this, of course, could come loose over time and be lost -- or placed on another piece that was not from the maker at all!

I am by no means an expert on glass of any kind.

Just an admirer of it and especially anything purple 💜

Please use your own judgment and  expertise to determine who the maker might be.

If anyone in the eBay community has information on this particular hen on nest they would like to share with me, I would be grateful for the information and would update this listing immediately.

In all my research, looking at hundreds of hen on nest photographs, I could not find one that seemed to be exactly like her in every detail.

I have included screenshots of the hens that looked the most like her with similar eyes, wattle, neck, tail, basket designs and a raised base.

But since she has no maker's mark, I cannot definitively say that she is any of these 😔

She's just so pretty, I got kind of carried away with the photographs so made many of them into collages to include as many as possible for your review.

If you require a specific angle or area that is not captured, please let me know and I'll be happy to provide it.

She does have a chip and a crack on one side that you will see in the photographs. They blend in well with the scalloped top of the basket and all the various color lines in this slag glass piece.

Please review all the photographs carefully, as they really are the best description, to determine if this lovely little lady, despite her flaws, might meet the criteria to join your collection.

If you have questions, please send me a message through eBay and I will reply as quickly as I can.
