THE CULTURAL SERIES
|
The Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program is a partnership between the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint to commemorate the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The eight coins in The Cultural Series celebrate aspects of Australia's culture.
Each coin carries the Olympic rings in colour and is edge-lettered with the words: 'Games of the XXVII Olympiad'. The obverse of each coin carries the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Year '2000', the country of issue,
`Australia', and the coin's monetary denomination.
Australian-born master coin designer and goldsmith and jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II, Stuart Devlin, created all of the reverse designs. Two of the designs, Festival of the Dreaming and A Sea Change 1, were based on original drawings by Australian Aboriginal athlete and artist, Nova Peris-Kneebone, who won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team in Atlanta in 1996.
THE DESIGNS (1) Festival of the Dreaming (2) A Sea Change 1 (3) A Sea Change 2 (4) Reaching the World 1 (5) Reaching the World 2 (6) Harbour of Life (Water) (7) Harbour of Life (Land) (8) Harbour of Life (Air)
2000 Sydney Olympics 8 Coin Silver Proof Set produced by the Royal Australian Mint and Perth Mint. These eight coins celebrate different aspects of the nation's cultural development.
The festival of the dreaming coin
The image on the reverse of this coin is a collaborative work by Australian Aboriginal athlete and artist, Nova Peris-Kneebone and master coin designer, Stuart Devlin, who was appointed goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1982. The coin depicts two people in the centre of the design. Around them is a circle representing their dreams, the smaller dots their families and friends, and the waves represent the obstacles they must overcome.
A Sea Change coin
The coin's reverse design depicts aspects of the Sydney Olympic cultural festival, ‘A Sea Change’, focusing on Australia’s evolution as a multicultural society. The start and growth of Australian society is symbolised by a wise Aboriginal elder surrounded by Australians from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The border consists of ships and aircraft that have brought immigrants who have contributed to Australian culture.
Each of the 8 silver coins are struck to a proof finish from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver. All coins are issued as Australian legal tender with a face value of Five Dollars. Limited mintage with just 100,000 of each coin produced.
NOTE: Please note that the exterior of the case may have natural wear and tear.
