These are three antique extra-large rounded pieces of chank (a close relative to but not exactly conch) shells from assorted original, traditional Naga jewelry. These are not new, recently cut or from another area and wrongly being called Naga shells. The Indian Ocean shell-cutting industry mostly evaporated by the mid-1850’s, thus these shells date to at least that far back. Trade routes took them to the north of India, through Bengali and Assam areas to the Naga people who then made the holes and used them for centuries in high-status adornments. These pieces range from 3 ¼” x 3 ¼” to 3” x 2 7/8”.
