First Mortgage Bond

The East Penn Iron Company acknowledges themselves indebted to Benjamin Helfrich, or bearer, in the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500), lawful money of the United States of America, which sum said Company promises to pay to the said Benjamin Helfrich, or bearer, at the office of the Company in the village of Lyons, Berks County, Pennsylvania, or at such other place in Berks County, as the said Company shall designate, on the first day of January, A.D. 1885, with interest thereon from the first day of January, A.D. 1875, at the rate of six per cent. per annum, payable semi-annually on the first day of the months of July and January in each year, on the delivery of the proper coupons therefor, without deduction for any tax or taxes on the principal or interest, which the Company may, by any present or future laws of the United States or of the State of Pennsylvania, be required to retain therefrom for National or State purposes, the Company hereby agreeing to pay the said tax or taxes.

...Company therein described, duly authorized, executed, and delivered by the said Company to the Safe Deposit Bank of Pottsville, in trust, to secure the payment of the principal and interest of this and other bonds, amounting in all to the sum of Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars, and to indemnify the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company for or by reason of their guaranty endorsed on the said bonds for the payment of the principal and interest thereof.

In Witness Whereof, the said Company have caused these presents to be sealed with their corporate seal, duly attested, at Lyons, this thirty-first day of December, Anno Domini, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four, (1874).
