Economic Growth and Agriculture

by Theodore W. Schultz

Nobel Prize in Economics Winner Theodore Schultz believed in the idea of investing in “human capital”. Investing in people through education, skills, health is just as important as investing in machines or infrastructure.

He studied why some countries stay poor and argued that farmers in developing nations are often rational and efficient - just constrained by lack of access to knowledge and resources. His work reshaped development policy by emphasizing education and training as engines of economic growth.

Schultz helped shift economics from focusing only on things to focusing on people. This book in particular helped modern economists stop seeing farmers as relics and start seeing them as decision-makers at the center of global development.
