The MTH RailKing RS-27 is modeled after the Alco RS-27 road switcher, a 2,400 horsepower diesel locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company between 1959 and 1962. These locomotives were designed for road and secondary mainline service and were known for their strong pulling power and distinctive Alco sound. MTH’s RailKing version captures the overall look and proportions of the prototype while offering a durable, operator focused model. RailKing RS-27 locomotives were commonly equipped with Proto-Sound, providing realistic diesel engine sounds, horn, bell, and additional railroad effects, and many examples are compatible with MTH’s DCS command system for enhanced control. The RS-27 served well into the 1970s on several major railroads, making it a popular prototype for both transitional and early diesel era layouts.
