After traveling back in time, Sarkhan Vol saves the Spirit Dragon, Ugin. The effects of this ripple through the timeline and avert the extinction of dragonkind on Tarkir. When Sarkhan returns to his own time, he finds a world that has greatly changed. Not only are the dragons still alive, they are leading the clans, which are now referred to as Broods. In this alternate timeline, the Broods focus solely on their allied color pairs, excluding the enemy colors that formed their original color wedges. Though rescued from death, Ugin is forced into hibernation to recover from the wounds he received in his titanic battle with Nicol Bolas. When Sorin Markov arrives in the altered timeline, he awakens Ugin from his slumber. Ugin agrees to travel with Sorin to fight the Eldrazi menace on Innistrad, but first insists that they find Nahiri, who originally helped to imprison the titans. Sarkhan also discovers that he is the only one who remembers the original Tarkir, and that in this alternate timeline, he was never born.
