The plump private detective Nero Wolfe (William Conrad) lives in a large stone house in the best area of Manhattan. A lift leads from his apartment to a greenhouse in the roof, where Wolfe grows orchids with the help of his gardener Theodore Horstman. He spends a few hours of the day here according to a precisely defined plan. This is the only movement that he willingly undertakes. Otherwise he prefers to sit behind his desk and think or let himself be pampered by his cook Fritz Brenner. However, when someone brings their worries and needs to him, Nero Wolfe is always ready to listen. There is no case, however complicated, that he cannot solve with his ingenious gift of combination and logic. In general, however, he lets his secretary Archie Goodwin, and sometimes one or the other private detective, do the necessary research. To the annoyance of Inspector Cramer from the police, Nero Wolfe is always a nose's length ahead despite his apparent laziness.
