Miami Beach April 24, 1987. The Replacements always lumped in with the established hardcore punk bands were making there way down south to one of the rowdier scenes in the country, the Miami Hardcore Scene in the 80’s was combined of teenage transplants from all over the country. The Cameo Theater Shows were some of the most epic events and The Replacements although there sound was evolving and Bob Stinson recently replaced by Slim Dunlop the crowd was unsure which Replacements would show up. Would they get the raucous high tempo energy that they were known for or would they give Miami what Paul Westerburg himself coined “the pussy set” where they purposely slowed everything down to a crawl completely pissing the previous crowd in Tampa the night before. That was not going to happen on this night as “Alex Chilton” one of Westerbergs boyhood idols as a big fan of “Big Star” was opening the show for The Matts. The raucous crowd known for making there opinions known as to what they considered music that was acceptable for The Cameo Theater and its patrons and much to many’s surprise Alex Chilton brought the crowd around bringing the entire Cameo to join in on his Box Tops hit “The Letter”. Chilton went on to do an encore from the album High Priest “Dali Lama” which an eager Paul Westerberg joined Chilton on stage.

The Replacements came on about 10pm with the first track off their new album “Please To Meet Me” which sent the crowd into a frenzy bodies slamming and flying from the stage. Tonight they were not getting “The Pussy Set” Westerburg and Tommy Stinson played it straight and the crowd reciprocated with massive surges of energy on there harder number , joined in the chorus of Matts anthems and all eyes on the stage during slower numbers like Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Go and Nightclub Jitters. The South Florida Hardcore crew had been known to shellack bands that would turn the tempo down but they seem to eat up anything the band dished out, a Sweet cover or Hank Williams “Hey Good Lookin” the crowd was all in. The high point of the show would be the unveiling of The Replacements song “Alex Chilton” for the first time in front of a live crowd with Alex beaming with pride from the side of the stage looking on approvingly. The Cameo Theater Miami Beach since the doors have closed and instead of the dank, dingy city block it was in the 1980’s is now in the heart of the revamped , gentrified South Beach Deco District now a haven for hipsters , elites and tourists. The building still stands with locked doors smack in the middle of the most fashionable districts in the country. Walking by there today it looks haunted. Rock & Roll Ghost.
