This is a vintage carved wooden antelope headdress sculpture from West Africa. It is typically worn as a crest atop a basketry headdress during agricultural festivals and dances. The headdress combines features of several animals, including the antelope, aardvark, and pangolin, all associated with digging the earth. Chiwara headdresses are categorized as either horizontal, vertical (like this one), or abstract.
The carving is 8" tall, 3" wide, 1" deep. With it's stone stand, it weighs 8oz.
