In January 1943, Germany planned to manufacture a new heavy tank to replace the Tiger II heavy tank. The German Army Ordnance Office tasked Porsche, Henschel, and MAN with its development. These three companies subsequently submitted four designs and produced prototypes: Porsche's VK4502(P), Henschel's VK4502(H) and VK4503(H), and MAN's VK4502(MAN). Ultimately, the German Army Ordnance Office selected Henschel's VK4503(H) design, and mass production began in December 1943. It was designated the "Tiger II" (or "Tiger 2") heavy tank, and a total of 489 Tiger II tanks were produced between December 1943 and March 1943.
