Selle Italia Evolution 2 “Flite” Carbon–Kevlar Saddle | Titanium Rails | 99g | Rare 1990s Ultra-Light This is an original Selle Italia Flite Evolution 2 ultra-light saddle, produced in 1994 during the peak of Italian experimentation with extreme weight reduction. The Evolution series represented Selle Italia’s most aggressive pursuit of minimal mass using carbon fiber, Kevlar reinforcement, and titanium rails, aimed squarely at elite racers and serious enthusiasts. Founded in 1897, Selle Italia has long been one of the most influential saddle manufacturers in professional cycling. By the 1990s, the Flite platform had become iconic in road racing, and the Evolution 2 pushed that design to its material limits. This saddle features a carbon fiber shell reinforced with Kevlar, visible in the distinctive brown-and-black hybrid weave. The shell is marked “Titanium Tube – 99gr,” indicating the titanium tube rail construction and factory weight class. Manufacturer-claimed weight class was 99 g; actual measured weight of saddle including rails with shell is 114.0 g (see photos), which is consistent with documented period tolerances for this model. The shape follows the classic Flite profile, favored by aggressive, forward-positioned road riders. These saddles were never intended for casual riding—they were built for climbers, racers, and weight-conscious builds where every gram mattered. Production numbers were limited, prices were very high for the era, and many examples were raced hard or cracked, making intact originals increasingly scarce today. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Structure is intact with no cracks, titanium rails are straight, and original decals remain crisp with minor partial fade near the front inner-leg contact area. Carefully stored and includes a period-correct box (not original retail box). Markings visible in photos:
  • “Flite evolution 2” script
  • “Titanium Tube 99gr” rail/weight designation
  • “Kevlar” aramid reinforcement marking
  • Red Selle Italia tail decal
This saddle is best suited for a collector, period-correct 1990s Italian build, display bike, or weight-weenie collection. It represents a defining moment in cycling history, when manufacturers pushed composite materials well before modern carbon saddle designs became common.

Original Price Context

When released, the Flite Evolution 2 was an exceptionally expensive saddle. Contemporary European listings and German cycling publications cite prices of 300 - 485 Deutsche Mark, equivalent to $300 - $350 USD in 1994 a premium, elite-level component at the time.

Inflation-adjusted (BLS CPI):

  • $300 (1994) ≈ $656 today
  • $325 (1994) ≈ $711 today
  • $350 (1994) ≈ $765 today

In other words, this saddle was already a high-end, exotic component when new, and its current valuation reflects both its original premium status and its increasing scarcity nearly three decades later.
