Antique 1900 Childs Hanky/Handkerchief~Der Struwwelpeter German Morality Tale #1

The hanky is in excellent condition, no holes, no frays, no stains, light fading, light soiling on the edge. Excellent machine stitched hem on three sides. One side is the fabric salvage. I believe this is made of linen. It measures approximately 12" x 12".

The images are based on rhymes from a series of 10 morality tales.  Each tale was written and illustrated by Dr Heinrich Hoffman in 1844 for his three year old son.  It was first published in book form in 1845.  It features the consequences of failing to obey parents or of behaving poorly. Child's hankies were made using these tales and what appears to be original illustrations.

Der Struwwelpeter is Slovenly Peter in English.  Each hanky features an image of a boy with unkempt long hair and long nails, an example of a lazy, filthy boy who refuses to groom himself and is consequently unpopular.

This rhyme illustrated on this hanky  is called "The Story of Wicked Frederich."
