TWO UNIQUE ANTIQUE GERMAN ARION SOCIETY MUSIC FESTIVAL PIN RIBBONS H179

Arion was a poet and musician from ancient Greece who created a type of choral song, the dithyramb. It is said he was saved from drowning by dolphins who were charmed by his music.

From Wikipedia: The Arion Society was a German-American musical society. It was founded in January 1854 to promote "the perpetuation of love for some of the characteristic elements of German civilization". It was disbanded because of Anti-German sentiment following World War IThey sponsored the Arion Ball in 1892 at Madison Square Garden to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. The society commissioned Bolossy Kiralfy for the event. The 1898 ball, also held at Madison Square Garden, had an Egyptian theme.

The age of these ribbons is unknown but both come from a collection of German American items from New York dating to the late 1890's-1900's. The longer ribbon is a yellowed cream and the other is a black and dark yellow color. They are showing signs of their age with wrinkles and areas of deterioration. The longer ribbon will arrive folded.
