CRANDALL NEW MODEL 1885

It is said to be the most beautiful typewriter in the world: the Crandall New Model from 1885.

It was manufactured by the Crandall Machine Co. in Groton, New York, USA.

It is one of the most impressive and revolutionary machines due to its design, its technical advancements, and its exquisite mother-of-pearl inlay. The machine was invented by Lucien Crandall, who patented his invention in 1875, and it began production in 1884. The Crandall was the first typewriter to use a cylinder, instead of typebars, on which all the characters were marked. Pressing a key activates levers that rotate the cylinder, printing the desired character on the paper. This system was later copied, but in a horizontal position, by the Chicago typewriter. Subsequently, Blick typewriters used a very similar system.

It was made of cast iron enameled in black. It features a keyboard with two rows of keys arranged in a curved pattern. It is one of the most ornate typewriters in history, completely decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays and floral motifs. It is undoubtedly a marvel and a delight to behold. The machine's name is emblazoned in gold lettering in the center. The two ribbon reels are chrome-plated and positioned in front of the carriage and on either side of the type cylinder. Its shape is quite unusual, very narrow at the back and widening towards the keyboard.

Our Crandall is in very good condition and functions perfectly. We have cleaned and polished the entire exterior of the machine, as well as thoroughly cleaning and polishing the carriage. However, it is important to remember that this is a 140-year-old typewriter. It's also important to note that the first typewriter in the world was made in 1873, so this Crandall was manufactured 12 years after the first one.

Besides the New Model, two other models of the Crandall typewriter were made, but this one is the most beautiful and the most expensive. The Crandall is a top-of-the-line machine with a high economic value. An essential piece in the best collections of antique typewriters in the world. A very rare, collector's item. Very few have survived after they were manufactured 140 years ago!
