The book, published in 1909, is a first‑person military memoir by an anonymous “Colonial Officer.” It recounts his service across five campaigns in South Africa during the latter half of the 19th century, culminating in the South African War (1899–1902). He originally expected to join the Zulu War, but instead found himself serving in the Cape Mounted Rifles, a unit that straddled the line between cavalry, scouts, and local constabulary.
