1973A COMPLETE SET
Description:
The first part of 1973 when the Colonels' "DEMOCRACY" - JUNTA was still in Greece, a new set of coins (also known as the first set of 1973) was minted with the following denominations: 10,20 and 50 lepta and 1,2,5,10,20.
In 1973 the last coins with the royal portrait are struck (King Constantine II). It is preserved in the denominations from 50lepta up to 10 drachmas; on the 20-drachmas coin however the theme of the silver 1960-dated coin featuring the goddess Selene on horseback is repeated. In this set, the first of 1973, the two small aluminium 10- and 20-lepta coins acquire a different form. One side features a trident and two dolphins (10 lepta) as well as an olive branch (20 lepta); the hole in the middle is no longer there. All the coins of this set bear the phoenix on one side.
In all coins, the obverse features the junta emblem, the phoenix with an armed soldier gazing at the rays of the Holy Spirit. Also one can see also the phrase "21st of April 1967" the day when the Junta was established in Greece.
1973B COMPLETE SET
Description:
Having grown deeply unpopular, the military junta, in an attempt to prevent further unfavourable developments, held a "referendum"in 1973 by which monarchy was abolished, the regime was renamed a republic and the yes-votes were reckoned as votes for the election of Georgios Papadopoulos, leader of the military coup, as President of greece. So this period that lasted up to the dictatorship's collapse in 1974 appears sometimes under the name Second Republic. The establishment of the new regime saw the minting of a new set of coins (also known as the second set of 1973) with the following denominations: 10,20 and 50 lepta and 1,2,5,10,20 drachmae. The themes displayed in the new coins - except the 10 and 20 lepta coins that have not changes since the first 1973 set - are virtually different from the ones in the previous issues.
In all coins, the obverse features the phoenix (the soldier is now gone in comparison of previous issues) gazing at the rays of the Holy Spirit. The phoenix is the emblem of the so-called revolution (military coup).
Their reverse bears; the anthemion, an antique ornamental motif also used during the 19th century as antefix (50 lepta); the Athenian owl which appears on the reverse types of Athenian coins from the mid 6th century B.C. (1 and 2 drachmae); the Pegasus, the well-known mythical winged horse that appeared in Corinthian coins from the late 7th century B.C. (5 and 10 drachmae); the head of Athena, inspired by the copper statue of Athena of Piraeus kept in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus (20 drachmae).
