Cerwin-Vega D-9 Vintage Walnut Speakers (1985) – Custom Dayton Audio 15” Woofers – Fully Disclosed – Pair
$1,600.00 USD
Offered for sale is a matched pair of vintage Cerwin-Vega D-9 floor-standing loudspeakers, manufactured in the United States circa 1985, finished in original walnut veneer cabinets. These are large, heavy, high-output speakers originally designed as Cerwin-Vega’s top-of-the-line consumer model, well known for their powerful low-frequency presence and high sensitivity.
⚠️ IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
These speakers are NOT factory-original. The original Cerwin-Vega 15” woofers have been professionally replaced with Dayton Loud Speaker Audio 15” woofers. Because of this, the speakers are accurately described as a custom-modified D-9 system, not a collector-grade original example.
By purchasing, the buyer acknowledges this modification.
• Original thick, heavy Cerwin-Vega walnut cabinets
• Approximate dimensions: 36” H × 18” W × 18.5” D
• Cabinets are structurally solid, clean, and well preserved
• Only minor cosmetic marks (two small ~¾” surface marks on one cabinet top)
• No swelling, separation, or water damage
• Grilles intact (see photos)
Please review all photos carefully — they are part of the description.
The original Cerwin-Vega D-9 15” woofers were replaced in 2018 with Dayton Audio 15” woofers, a well-established and respected brand in professional and DIY audio.
Why the replacement was done:
• Original woofers were over 40 years old
• Speaker surrounds and cones have a known service life (typically 10–30 years)
• Replacement was chosen for reliability, durability, and continued use, not resale deception
What this means sonically:
• Bass character is tight, controlled, and punchy
• Output remains strong and room-filling
• Overall voicing differs from factory-original D-9 tuning
• These are not “boomy party speakers” in the original CV sense — they are more controlled and balanced
This system is best described as a custom D-9 platform using original Cerwin-Vega cabinetry and mid/high drivers with modern 15” low-frequency drivers.
• Original 3-way D-9 crossover network retained
• Typical crossover points:
– Woofer → Midrange: ~500 Hz
– Midrange → Tweeter: ~3,500 Hz
• Original midrange and horn tweeter drivers remain installed
• Buyer should understand that woofer replacement changes impedance, efficiency, and frequency response compared to factory spec
These speakers have been functioning reliably in a home listening environment and were rarely used after the woofer replacement.
(Provided for historical context — not a claim of originality)
• Enclosure: Large bass-reflex cabinet
• Estimated internal volume: ~4.0–4.35 cu ft per cabinet
• Port tuning (approximate): ~30–32 Hz
• Original woofer reference: CV 152WR (not included)
• Midrange: Dual 6” cone drivers
• Tweeter: Horn-loaded high-frequency driver
