A complete set of engine log books covering engine positions one to four for the Rolls-Royce Avon engines fitted to De Havilland Comet 4 aircraft G-BDIT during its operational life.
The records cover the period from manufacture in 1959 through to the aircraft's retirement from service in 1981, when G-BDIT was sold to Warbird Museum of Great Britain Ltd prior to its eventual scrapping in 1984.
Please note that the log books relate to the engine positions on the aircraft rather than necessarily to the same physical engines throughout the aircraft's life, as engine changes and replacements were carried out during service in accordance with normal airline maintenance practice.
The collection contains examples bearing Ministry of Transport, Department of Trade and Industry and Civil Aviation Authority covers, reflecting the changing regulatory environment during the aircraft's operational life. The contents begin at the earliest dates associated with each engine position, suggesting some of the original covers became worn during service and were replaced or rebound during their working lives.
The books contain maintenance records, inspections, overhauls, component changes and operational history associated with the Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines fitted to this aircraft during service with Dan Air.
G-BDIT was one of the later surviving examples of the De Havilland Comet in commercial operation and these records provide an interesting documentary history covering more than two decades of British civil jet aviation.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a noticeable tobacco odour present when the pages are turned. I normally treat affected items using ozone treatment where appropriate, however I have chosen not to do so in this case as repeated treatments over an extended period may not be kind to historic paper records of this age.
The books show the expected wear, marks and signs of use associated with documents that spent many years in active airline service.
