A bold Danish freehand from Preben Holm’s Copenhagen workshop — this hand-cut example showcases dramatic shaping, natural plateau detail, and full artisan stamping from the golden age of Danish pipe design.

Maker & Origin

Preben Holm was one of the defining figures of Danish freehand pipe making. By the early 1970s, he was producing sculptural briars under his own name, often stamped “Preben Holm Hand Cut Copenhagen Denmark.” These pipes were handmade in his Copenhagen workshop and are prized for their expressive shaping, plateau accents, and rich finishes. Holm’s work helped popularize the Danish freehand style internationally until his untimely passing in 1989.

Shape & Finish

This pipe features a dramatic freehand bowl with natural plateau rim, flared heel, and flowing shank. The finish is a warm walnut stain with expressive grain and rugged texture. Stem is black vulcanite, hand-shaped with fishtail bit — unbranded.

Stamping & Dating

Stamped “Preben Holm Hand Cut Copenhagen Denmark” on the shank. This confirms direct artisan production from Holm’s own workshop, likely dating to the mid-to-late 1970s when his freehands were at peak popularity.
